About Vietnamese Language

Spoken by about 90 million people, Vietnamese is the national and official language of Vietnam. It is one of the languages in the Austroasiatic language family, a large language family of continental Southeast Asia, which has a long-established recorded history. Since Vietnam was ruled by the Chinese for over ten decades until 938 AD, Vietnamese vocabulary contains about 50-60% Chinese loanwords. The same goes for Vietnamese letters which were originally adapted from the Chinese script.

Development of Vietnamese Alphabet

During the 17th century, Roman Catholic missionaries started arriving in Vietnam and introduced a new script for Vietnamese called “Quc Ng” which was developed based on the Latin alphabet and has been used ever since. This new script was used in parallel with the old Chinese-based script until the 20th century. Nowadays, only Quc Ng is used for writing Vietnamese.
