About Hindi Language

Hindi is one of the languages which have the most number of speakers in the world. According to BBC, Hindi has roughly 545 million speakers, of which 425 million are using Hindi as a first language. It is one of the official languages and is mainly spoken in India, although there are also Hindi speakers in some countries outside India such as Nepal, Fiji, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Lingua Franca

With over 1.2 billion people, India is the second-most populous country in the world. However, not all Indian people are Hindi native speakers. According to data in 2001, India has a total of 1721 languages, out of which 30 languages are being spoken by more than a million people. Moreover, states within India can legislatively specify their own official language, resulting in more than 20 officially recognized languages in India. Nonetheless, only Hindi and English are acknowledged by the government as the official languages, with Hindi serving as a “lingua franca” or a bridge language used among Indian people who do not share the same native language.
